Overview

Background

Gardening Mod! expands Grand Theft Auto Online by giving the game’s plants - each paired with a physical plant in real life - a proxy for their care needs. Players are equipped with special controllers to perform these digital/physical tasks, such as watering and trimming, and can earn rewards by pursuing these needed plants in the crazy world of Los Santos.

Problem Statement

In the real world, we coexist, interact, and influence each other with plants, but in digital worlds like multiplayer online games, they seem to be just decorative. This raises the question: Why are living plants absent from this digital twin world?

Grand Theft Auto Online

Grand Theft Auto Online has created a digital twin of Los Angeles called Los Santos that creates and emphasizes the connection between the digital world and the physical world. At the same time, its multiplayer online format offers the possibility of introducing plants into the game world as players.

Plant Player

By planting sensors for the plant, all the data of the plant will be captured and synchronized with Grand Theft Auto Online. Through the plant sensor, the plant profile can be created, and their real-time status can be reflected digitally to other players.

Game Controllers

In designing the watering tool, I used the Joy-con as a medium for people to use as the primary controller, both in the physical and digital worlds. Through using everyday objects as part of assembling the interactive tool, and adding 3D printed accessories, the various game controllers that can interact with plants are eventually made up.
